Step 1: Requirements for Working at the Refinery
Refinery Specific Access/ID Badge Requirements
Contract workers will obtain their refinery access ID card at the Refinery Security & Badging office at the following address:

The following is required and will be verified by Refinery Security prior to issuing the Refinery access ID card:
- Drug & Alcohol testing compliance
- Background Check
- Successful completion of the site-specific training
TWIC
The Louisiana Refining Division for Marathon Petroleum Company LP requires contract workers possess a valid a TWIC card. TWIC offices can be found nationwide - a location finder is within their website.

Do I need to bring anything with me?
- You will be required to show two forms of identification. One must be a government issued photo id (such as a driver's license or passport). The second form can be a birth certificate, marriage certificate, or a DOT physical card.
- There is typically a three to four week turnaround from enrollment until card activation. Eligibility issues or insufficient information may increase the turnaround time.
- Contract Employees are required to know their TWIC Password for the Identification Card prior to obtaining a Marathon Contractor Badge

NOTE: Individuals must present a valid picture ID to receive their Refinery access ID card.
Contractor employees must always keep the Refinery Access ID Card in their possession while on Refinery Property.

Drug and Alcohol Testing Program
Contract Employees must be enrolled in an MPC approved Drug and Alcohol Test program.
All Contract Employees must be enrolled in approved program

Contract Employees status must be tested in an MPC approved program prior to coming onsite. Any Contract Employee not "green-lighted" will not be allowed onsite.

Contractor Orientation/Training Requirements
All contract workers must participate and successfully complete an ARSC Reciprocal training course and an MPC approved site-specific training course prior to obtaining a Contractor Badge.

Safety Essentials Orientation Exclusive
Update May 2025
In May of 2024, the MPC Garyville Refinery announced the transition from Basic Orientation Plus (BOP) to the exclusive use of Safety Essentials, as the required orientation for entry into the Garyville Refinery. This transition was scheduled for May 1, 2025.
The Garyville Refinery will be postponing this transition until January 1, 2026.
As January approaches, our goal is to ensure a smooth transition between orientations, therefore, the MPC Garyville Refinery will continue to accept unexpired Basic Plus/Basic Plus Refresher that is completed on or before December 31, 2025. Once this Basic Plus/Basic Plus Refresher training expires, contractor business partners are required to have an active/completed Safety Essentials/Safety Essentials Espanol course/Safety Essentials Refresher, prior to entering the Garyville Refinery.
All other Marathon Site Specific Trainings, including: Marathon Essentials, Garyville Essentials, and the GVL HF Alky Orientation will remain the same.
Marathon Electrical Safety Orientation
Effective August 1st, 2025, the Marathon - Garyville Refinery will be require the completion of Marathon’s Electrical Safety Orientation (19MPCESO) course for identified companies.
Note: If your work scope falls under the following criteria, all company employees entering the Garyville Refinery shall comply with this rule.
This course would be required for the following work scope, but is not limited to:
· performing electrical work on equipment that is rated 50Volts and above,
· or exposed to voltages 50 volts and above.
· Such work scope examples include, but are not limited to:
- measuring for absence or presence of voltage on circuits 50V or above,
- to make wiring circuit connections or disconnects on circuits 50V or above, or
- to be within the limited approach boundary (3’ 6”) of exposed energized electrical connections 50Vs or above.
Company services meeting this criteria include, but is not limited to:
-Instrument and Electrical construction and maintenance,
-HVAC,
-Fire alarm,
-Heat Stress,
-Electrical Heat Tracing,
-NETA testing,
-Gate servicing,
-cloud unit,
-Electrical equipment rental,
-Motor operated valves,
-Elevators,
-Electric Hoist Crane, and
-Analyzer companies.

Step 2: What to Know before Arriving Onsite
Drug, Alcohol, and Weapons Policy
Illegal drugs and unauthorized alcohol, weapons and unauthorized firearms are prohibited on refinery property. All individuals are subject to search while on company property.
General Personal Protective Equipment
The following PPE is required for entry into a process unit and/or tank farm area(s):
- Hard Hat
- Chemical Goggles - Available on Person
- Safety Glasses
- Hearing Protection
- NFPA 2112 FR Clothing
- Gloves - Min - Cut Level 3 Glove for General Duty Use
- Personal H2S Monitor
- Safety Toed Shoe with a defined heel.
- Certain areas/jobs may require additional PPE which shall be worn in accordance with posted signs or as stated on the Safe Work Permit.
NOTE: Contractor PPE is not supplied by Marathon Petroleum Company LP.

Facial Hair Policy
