Step 1: Requirements for Working at the Refinery
Drug and Alcohol Testing Program
MPC El Paso Refinery requires all contract employees to be enrolled, and they must participate in, an approved drug and alcohol testing program (DISA). The contract employee must have an "active/green" status in order to be issued a refinery access badge. Any "inactive/red" status results must be managed directly with DISA and not MPC personnel. Drug screen costs are the responsibility of the contractor and not MPC.
Turnaround time for testing method results are as follows:
- Urine: minimum 2-3 days
- Hair follicle: minimum 2-3 days
Background Check Requirements
Graded background checks are required for everyone requesting a MPC entry badge. DISA Global Solutions is the preferred risk management screening provider for the El Paso Refinery. The graded score must be a 2 or below. Marathon Petroleum also accepts risk management examinations (background checks) from the following list of vendors:

*Please be aware that it is up to your organization to follow-up with the Background Check Vendor to confirm results. (Background checks are good for 2 years from their order date)
Prior to arrival, contractors must have satisfied Marathon Petroleum screening requirements. These will be conducted by the background check vendor (DISA). Below is a list of the screening items;
- DCCHA-breath, alcohol and urine screen
- DCCHT w/o random-hair follicle test
- Graded background screening (2 year renewal time frame)
- Seven (7) year residence history of county criminal reports
- Social security number verification
- SafetyNet Criminal Jurisdiction (includes address history)
- USA Patriot Search
Contractor Orientation Requirements
Our new Contractor Onboarding Training is now LIVE! Take advantage of Marathon's updated and improved way to complete the required onboarding training courses. Training is now available for streaming from HASC, any participating Safety Council or via any mobile device.
Required Courses:
- Safety Essentials (SE-SAFE) (3 hours)
- Safety Essentials Enhancer (SE-SAFER) (1.5 hourshours)
- Marathon Petroleum Essential Orientation (19MPCESN) (1.5 hours)
- Marathon Petroleum El Paso Refinery Site-Specific (19MPCSAO) (45 minutes)
- Marathon Petroleum Security Awareness Orientation (19MPCSAO) (30 minutes)

Course Times:
Courses must be completed between the hours of 6:00AM-6:00PM (CST) on Monday-Fridays or from 8:00AM-4:30PM (CST) on Saturday and Sundays.
Refinery Specific Access/ID Badge Requirements
Contract workers will obtain their refinery access ID card at the Refinery Security Operations Center office at the following address:

The following are required, and must be verified by El Paso Refinery Security prior for refinery badge issuance:
- Drug and alcohol testing compliance
- Background check
- Successful completion of the site-specific training
- A valid picture ID (Required)
Badging Hours:
Refinery badges are only issued on M-F from 7:00AM-3:00PM.

Illegal drugs and unauthorized alcohol, weapons and unauthorized firearms are prohibited on refinery property. All individuals are subject to search while on company property.

Facial Hair Policy
Beards are prohibited within the refinery. Mustaches and short sideburns are permitted if they do not interfere with the facial seal of protective breathing devices.

PPE
The following PPE is required for entry into a process unit and/or tank farm area(s):
- Hard Hat
- Chemical Goggles - Available on Person
- Safety Glasses
- Hearing Protection
- NFPA 2112 FR Clothing
- Gloves - Min - Cut Level 3 Glove for General Duty Use
- Personal H2S Monitor
- Safety Toed Shoe with a defined heel
Certain areas/jobs may require additional PPE which shall be worn in accordance with posted signs or as stated on the Safe Work Permit.
NOTE: Contractor PPE is not supplied by Marathon Petroleum Company LP.
